Hey there Reader,
Last week I went to my first ceramics class.
I’d been thinking about doing ceramics for a while, and when I saw this particular class advertised, I emailed the tutor. She said that rather than structured lessons, people move at their own pace on their own projects. I asked how that would work as a complete beginner learning the basic skills.
She didn’t really answer the question.
But it was local. And my word of the year is local. I want to build more connections in my community. So I went anyway.
If I’m honest, the first class felt like a complete bust.
Almost everyone else had been there before. They knew what they were doing. They had projects in mind.
The other new person and I just… had clay.
I made a couple of random things with no real thought or understanding behind them. I left feeling disappointed and slightly deflated. Part of me didn’t want to go back.
Not because I don’t like ceramics.
But because I didn’t know what I was trying to make.
During the week, instead of quitting, I did something simple.
I did a little research. I chose something beginner-level but interesting.
Coasters.
Nothing ambitious. Nothing artistic. Just clear.
When I went back with that intention, the experience was completely different. I wasn’t guessing. I wasn’t copying what others were doing. I was practising skills in service of something specific.
The clay hadn’t changed.
I had.
This is what I see happening in midlife all the time.
Capable women shaping something… without clarity.
You have:
- A full calendar
- A solid career
- Responsibilities
- Competence
- Momentum
But when you pause and ask, “What am I actually building now?” the answer isn’t obvious.
So you keep shaping.
You say yes to what’s in front of you.
You maintain what already exists.
You improve at the edges.
And quietly, it starts to feel unsatisfying.
Not because you’re failing.
Because you’re working with clay without a design.
🔍 One thing to consider
Where in your life are you shaping by default rather than by intention?
If you had to name one small, specific thing you’re trying to build in this season, what would it be?
Not a vague improvement. Not “be happier.”
Something concrete.
A different rhythm.
A different boundary.
A different identity.
Clarity changes the experience of the work.
🌍 A wider lens
High-achieving women rarely struggle with capability.
They struggle with clarity at transition points.
You successfully built one version of your life.
But identity shifts. Energy shifts. Priorities shift.
If your structure doesn’t shift with you, you default to maintaining what already exists.
And over time, that maintenance starts to feel like stagnation.
Not dramatic. Not catastrophic.
Just slightly off.
That feeling isn’t a lack of discipline.
It’s a signal that you may need a clearer design for this chapter.
This is exactly what we do in Life Beyond the Checkbox: Self Discovery.
Before we optimise habits.
Before we redesign schedules.
Before we set goals.
We get clear on what you’re actually trying to build.
Values.
Strengths.
Direction.
A mission for this chapter.
Because discipline without clarity just creates more activity.
Clarity creates design.
If you’re ready to stop shaping by default and start designing intentionally, Life Beyond the Checkbox: Self Discovery is where we do that work.
It’s one-to-one, and I have space for two new clients this month.
