The Good Life

Where life feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside

Hey there Reader,

This past week has felt loud.

There’s been escalation overseas, accompanied by strong reactions, strong opinions, and a news cycle that never stops.

Even if it hasn’t directly affected your day-to-day life, it can sit in the background: in headlines, notifications, or conversations that feel sharper than usual.

There’s a difference between being informed and being activated, and most people don’t notice when they’ve crossed that line.

🔍 One thing to notice

When something significant is happening that you can't influence, what do you do with the energy it creates?

Do you keep checking for updates?
Do you mentally run through possible scenarios?
Do you feel a responsibility to stay across everything?

You can care about what’s happening.

But you can't carry it.

Carrying implies responsibility. It suggests that through effort or attention, you could change the outcome.

But most of what unfolds isn’t yours to move.

When you hold it as if it is, your body responds. Your shoulders tighten. Your breathing shifts. You feel slightly on edge without being able to name why.

That’s a stress response.

🌍 A wider lens

Agency isn’t about pretending things are fine.

It’s about recognising what’s actually within your control.

Your attention.
What you consume.
The tone of your conversations.
The next action you choose.

When circumstances feel chaotic, many people react to whatever is loudest. That reaction can feel productive, but it doesn’t change what’s actually yours to act on.

Values-driven action is different.

If you value steadiness, you might limit your exposure.
If you value connection, you might reach out to someone close to you.
If you value contribution, you might act locally rather than reacting globally.

Psychological research consistently shows that acting in alignment with personal values strengthens wellbeing and reduces anxious and depressive symptoms — not because the world becomes calmer, but because your relationship to it becomes clearer. This is core to the work I do with clients.

If you’re unclear about what matters most in this season, the loudest voice will shape your response.

Clarity prevents that.

Before you close this email, ask yourself:
What is actually mine to act on this week — and what isn’t?

If you’ve noticed a pattern in how you respond to pressure, noise, or uncertainty, that’s often where meaningful change begins.

That’s the work we do inside Self Discovery.

It’s structured, one-to-one work focused on clarifying what matters now.
