The Good Life

Where life feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside

Hey there Reader

A few years ago, I decided it was time to finally put myself first. I started saying no more often. I blocked out me time. I focused on what I thought I wanted.

But to my surprise, I didn’t feel all that much happier. Instead of fulfilled, I felt... untethered. Lost at times.

I’d traded one extreme for another—years of self-sacrifice for what I thought was freedom.

Shigehiro Oishi writes:

“Self-sacrifice is admirable, to be sure, but prioritizing it can lead people to lose sight of their own desires until their lives no longer feel authentic.”

That hit me. Because putting yourself first doesn’t work when you don’t know who you are or what you want.

The first step isn’t self-prioritization—it’s reconnection.
With your true desires. With what a good life really means to you.

So this week, I want to invite you to gently ask:
What do you actually want—and is it time to come back to that?

🔧Tool to try

A simple, science-backed strategy to support your wellbeing today

Try this quick reflection:

  1. Write down 3 things you want—not what you should want, or what others expect—just pure, honest desire.
  2. Now write 3 things you’ve said yes to this week out of obligation.
  3. Notice the gap.

Start small. Awareness is where authenticity begins.

Where might you be confusing self-sacrifice with self-worth?

And what desire have you been silencing because it feels “selfish”?
