The Good Life

Where life feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside

Hey there Reader,

A while back, Ben and I grabbed two chocolate bars as a treat: one we always get (Whittaker's Berry Biscuit), and one we’d never tried.

It felt like a tiny adventure. The new one? Honestly—not the best.

But it got me thinking about those micro-moments when we choose to explore over sticking with the familiar.

This week, I came across a quote in our current Book Club read, Life in Three Dimensions, that put words to something I’ve felt for a while:

“When an exploration results in a positive outcome, it is associated with higher levels of happiness. But when the exploration results in a negative experience, it is not.”
— Shigehiro Oishi

So much of what we call growth or living fully is about choosing variety—and with that, risking discomfort.

It’s okay to acknowledge that exploration doesn’t always feel good in the moment.

Sometimes, you get the dodgy chocolate bar.

But sometimes, you find something that expands your life.

🔧 Tool to try

A 5-minute self check-in

On a piece of paper, draw two columns:

Left column: What’s familiar and comforting right now?
Right column: Where might I be curious to explore—just a little?

This isn’t about blowing up your life. It’s about noticing your edges—and choosing intentional exploration.

🖋️ Something to consider

Where in your life are you resisting new experiences—not because you don’t want them, but because you fear the discomfort of not liking them?
